What is the first animal that comes to your head when you hear the word “Support Animal”? Well, if you’re thinking of a dog, you’re correct! But, did you know that ferrets can be classified as support animals? That’s right, ferrets can help people with disabilities in many ways. Ferrets can help people calm down, and even alert them of an incoming panic attack. Benefits of having ferrets as a service animal are that they are comfortable around humans, help with mental health, and are trainable.

To commence, ferrets can be a beneficial support animal because they are comfortable around humans. According to “Bechewy-The Ferret Factor,” ferrets are very social. This means that they will be happy with their owner. In “Bechewy- How Ferrets Help,” the author stated, “They are always interested in what is going on with their human,” Richardson, the director of the Ferret Rescues Ferrets at Heart says. This piece of evidence show that ferrets are very curious, which means they are always ready to figure out what’s wrong with their human. Based on “Trifl,” the passage shows that ferrets have been domesticated a long time ago and have a comfortable relationship with humans. This makes them idea to have as a support or therapy animal.

To continue, ferrets  can be beneficial support animals because they help you with mental health. In “Bechewy-How Ferrets help,” the passage states that Scott Myles said that energetic ferrets increase morale and make people in need laugh. For example, I have known people that have owned ferrets in the past, and they were always joyful around them. The author in “Ferret World,” stated that a person with depression kept feeling that no one loved them, which made them feel worse. Although, their ferrets showed them affection and love, which helped them greatly. Personally, if I had depression, I would love to have a ferret by my side. In the passage “Neeness,” it stated that a woman went to court for keeping her therapy ferrets, claiming that they helped prevent seizures. Owning and interacting with ferrets helps people with brain chemistry.

Lastly, ferrets can be beneficial support animals because they are trainable. According to “Bechewy,” ferrets can be trained to alert handlers to take medication when needed. This is very helpful to people who might be forgetful. In “Bechewy- How Ferrets Help,” it states that Frances Woodard of Ontario, Canada was able to train her ferrets to alert her on oncoming panic attacks triggered by her agoraphobia. Imagine if she didn’t have her ferrets—what do you think would have happened?According to “All Ferrets,” the author stated that ferrets can be trained to deliver comfort and affection to people with disabilities. Like other support animals, ferrets can be very helpful according to this piece of evidence.
